Sagay announces winners of visual arts competition

The “Abundance” painting of Jose Angelo Jumarito bested other artworks in the first-ever Sagay City Visual Arts Competition held at the Taliambong Activity Center in Sagay City on Friday, June 10.

His painting, which embodies “the vibrance of the culture in Sagay City” emerged as the winner adjudged by five prolific artists in the province.

In his artist statement, he said that the painting magnifies the richness of the sea, notable city landmarks, Sinigayan Festival, and master artist Nunelucio Alvarado.

Gelo Dequiña won 2nd place with his painting “Laragway sang Sagay”, and Gerom Booc was in 3rd place with his work “Pagpanubli sang Dunang Manggad”.

The top three winners received P30,000, P20,000, and P15,000 respectively, and a trophy and certificate.

The competition’s theme is “Ang Mga Ginapabugal nga Panublion sang Sagay (Sagay’s Heritage)”.

The top five finalists also received P8,000 each and a certificate. They were John Quincy Hervias, Joven Dionaldo, Kennette Luague, Christian Diaz, and Jay Belarmino.

Ten artists awarded the Mayor’s Choice were Jason Eledia, Karla Bernabe, Rolando Salimbaga, Jr., Arvin Hervias, Emmanuel Escano, Rolan Gonzales, July Carl Ladra, Ramil Doma, MK Villacastin, and Maria Leah Castor. They received P5,000 each and a certificate.

Digital Artist Revo Yanson, Pintor Kulapol Founding Member Burog Alvarado, Social Realist Artist Mikiboy Pama, Hibalag Aritst Group President J.R. Ledesma, and Advertising Executive Edbon Sevilleno were the judges of the competition with Nuklar Alvarado as contest coordinator.

The event was attended by Sangguniang Panglungsod Committee on Tourism Chair Councilor Arthur Christopher Marañon, Charise Marañnon, Nunelucio and Rosalia Alvarado, and other artists.*
