A philanthropist, famous chef, world-renowned violinist and a bestselling author lead this year’s 10 outstanding Cadizeños to be honored at rites to be held as part of Cadiz City’s 57th Charter Anniversary at the Cadiz Arena, 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 4.
To be honored are philanthropist Ian Manuel Lo, chef Antonio Escalante, world-renowned violinist Gilopez Kabayao and bestselling author Thea Guanzon, a press release from Cadiz City said Wednesday, July 3.
Lo, whose parents Dr. Manuel and Corazon are certified Cadizeños, was a prominent figure who poured significant help to Cadiz City during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As owner of the Negros Grace Pharmacy chain and president of the Dr. Manuel Lo Foundation Inc., Lo will be honored as an outstanding Cadizeño in the corporate excellence category.
Escalante will be honored for his expertise in producing high-quality and savory food being the founder of one of the country’s well-known food chains, the Antonio’s Group of Restaurants (AGR).
Exhibiting his God-given talent not just in the local scene, but also on the international stage, Kabayao’s great influence on music is acknowledged in the world of performing arts, the press release also said.
Cadiz’s bestselling author Thea Guanzon is also included in the list of awardees.
Her book titled “The Hurricane Wars” has impacted readers – young and old – around the world.
Also to be honored is Zarex Onatin in the visual art category.
Onatin used to be the visual artist of three defunct Cadiz’s local theaters – Showbiz Cinema (1983-1985), Rico Cinema (1996-2000) and Sampaguita Theater (1996-2005).
Former president of the United Architects of the Philippines-Bacolod Azucar Chapter, Architect Rolem Basiya, will also join the band of outstanding Cadizeños.
He is cited for his expertise and selfless service to Cadiz that qualifies him to be awarded in the Academic Achievement category.
In the field of sports, taekwondo ace and 30th South East Asian (SEA) Games front runner, Dex Ian Chavez, was chosen for his feats that have made Cadiz known in the international arena.
Cadizeña lawyer Virma Gay Zymons, who is currently working/living in Australia, will also be cited for her exemplary deeds in aiding Filipino seafarers, among other notable charity works in various hospitals and hotels in Canberra during COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2021, Zymons was also chosen as one of 75 outstanding Filipino-Australian women by the Philippine Embassy in Canberra, Australia.
Named Environmental Achievement awardee is Mary Jean Tanaya whose environment stewardship in leading the Cotcot Upland Farmers and Farmworkers Association (CUFFA) has caused notable positive changes in Cadiz environment and vegetable production.
The Girl Scout of the Philippines -Cadiz Chapter will also receive an award for exemplifying dedication to social and community services that truly embody the spirit of compassion and selflessness.
Cadiz Mayor Salvador Escalante Jr. said he is very proud of this year’s pool of outstanding Cadizeños.
Their great successes in their chosen fields of endeavor are reflections of how Cadiz City molds its constituents not just to become better but to be outstanding citizens here and abroad, Escalante said. *
