Heavy rains induced by Severe Tropical Storm “Opong” washed down more volcanic debris from Mt. Kanlaon, causing the Ibid Creek in La Castellana, Negros Occidental, to overflow again.

Ibid Creek in Sitio Tamburong, Barangay Biak-na-Bato, which is currently being cleared of lahar sediments, was again filled with more debris, La Castellana Mayor Añejo Nicor said on Friday, Sept. 26.

A total of 81 families or 254 individuals in Sitio Tamburong were affected by the flooding, Remuel Lajo, commander of the La Castellana Incident Management Team, said.

Two houses in Barangay Biak na Bato were damaged.

Nicor said the volcanic debris, consisting of stones and sand about 0.5 meters thick, was washed onto the highway in Sitio Tamburong, rendering it temporarily impassable early Friday morning.

Clearing operations were conducted, and the road was passable by mid-morning, Nicor said, adding that a Canter vehicle had been stranded in the area earlier that day.

The lahar sediments from previous Kanlaon eruptions filled the area near the Tamburong Bridge, Nicor said.

Flooding also hit Barangay Robles in La Castellana, he added.*
