The Police Regional Office–Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) has ordered the creation of a Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) to investigate the killing of a barangay kagawad who was shot dead in Brgy. Tambad, Cauayan, Negros Occidental, early Monday morning, November 3.

Initial reports from the Cauayan Municipal Police Station (MPS) said the incident happened around 5 a.m. when six unidentified armed men arrived at the victim’s residence, called him outside, and shot him multiple times without provocation.

The suspects immediately fled toward an unknown direction after the attack.

The victim, who was also an active member of the anti-communist organization SAMBAYANAN – Cauayan Chapter, sustained gunshot wounds in the chest and abdomen and was declared dead at the Cauayan Health Center.

Police recovered three empty cartridges and one deformed 5.56mm slug believed to have been fired from a long firearm.

The Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) and Forensic Unit of NOCPPO were called to process the crime scene and collect evidence.

The SITG will be composed of investigators from the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (NOCPPO), Cauayan MPS, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), and other support units, in coordination with the 15th Infantry Battalion, Philippine Army.

The task group will explore all possible motives, including the victim’s public service and organizational affiliation.

BGen. Arnold Thomas C. Ibay, Regional Director of PRO-NIR, condemned the killing, calling it “a cowardly act that has no place in a peaceful and democratic society”.*
