The Police Regional Office Negros Island Region is deploying 1,162 personnel across key NIR locations to ensure peace and order during public demonstrations marking the anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law on Sunday, Sept. 21.
“The right to peaceful assembly is a fundamental pillar of our democracy, one that we fully recognize and are sworn to protect,” PBrig. Gen. Arnold Thomas Ibay, PRO NIR director, said in a press statement on Friday.
“At the same time, we have a solemn duty to ensure that public safety, order, and the rights of others are equally upheld. PRO NIR is fully committed to striking this balance,” he added.
Ibay said that the PRO NIR will remain vigilant, fair, and ready to protect communities and defend the rule of law. The public is encouraged to remain calm, cooperative, and vigilant during the events, he said.
The deployment aims to uphold democratic rights while ensuring the safety and welfare of the public, a PRO NIR press release said.
Personnel have been assigned to various operational duties, including fixed posts, mobile and motorcycle patrols, foot patrols, and traffic management, the PRO NIR added.
The police will also be using Civil Disturbance Management (CDM) units and drones to enhance situational awareness, it said.
PRO NIR assures the community that its personnel are on heightened alert to manage traffic and provide assistance to commuters who may be affected by any transport strikes or demonstrations.
The office has coordinated with local government units, transport groups, and other stakeholders to minimize disruptions and prevent incidents, the PRO NIR said.
The PRO NIR is calling on all participants to exercise their rights responsibly and peacefully, warning that any attempt to exploit the situation for violence or illegal activities will be dealt with firmly.*
