What could have been a happy family gathering for a policeman turned into a nightmare when he died in a fire at Barangay San Fernando in Talisay City, Negros Occidental, on Christmas Day, December 25.
Cpl. Jobert Diasanta, 36, of Barangay Matab-ang was trapped inside the burning house of his parents.
The Silay police station cop had gone to visit his folks after he went off duty and was sleeping when the fire broke out at past 5 a.m. Saturday.
Maj. Jigger Gimeno, Talisay City police chief, said the policeman’s younger brother tried to save him but failed.
An unattended lighted candle was seen as the culprit of the fire.
Gimeno said there was still no electricity in the village after Super Typhoon “Odette” hit and the affected families were using improvised lamps and candles.*
