‘Oppose economic Cha-cha’

The progressive group Human Rights Advocates Negros (HRAN) is urging Negrenses to support their call to reject the proposed amendments to the economic provisions of the Constitution as it will cause more exploitation and monopoly by big corporations.

HRAN, in a statement Thursday, February 22, said with the upcoming anniversary of the EDSA People Power uprising on February 25, it is urging the public to take a stand against the “economic Cha-cha”.

“The economic Cha-cha will open the productive natural and human resources of the Philippine archipelago to exploitation by monopoly and big multinational and transnational corporations”, HRAN said.

“The economic Cha-cha will open the productive natural and human resources of the Philippine archipelago to exploitation by monopoly and big multinational and transnational corporations”, HRAN said.

It will worsen land grabbing and dislocation of marginalized small farmers, farmworkers and fisher folks and exacerbate poverty, HRAN said.

“The goal of the economic Cha-cha is to further liberalize the economy by allowing foreigners to own agricultural land, allowing entry into our patrimonial lands such as forest lands and fishing areas, the privatization of public utilities and services and deregulating certain government functions,” HRAN claimed.*
