‘Opong’ floods affect 2,505 families in Bacolod, 1,257 persons evacuate

There were about 2,505 families affected by Typhoon Opong in Bacolod City, of which 255 are in evacuation centers, Bacolod Mayor Greg Gasataya said on Friday, Sept. 26.

In addition to the relief packs prepared by the Bacolod Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO), they have also requested family food packs from the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Gasataya said in a Fecebook post.

There were 255 families with 1,257 individuals in evacuation centers in barangays Taculing, 10, Banago, Pahanocoy and Cabug .

The DRRMO Emergency Response Team evacuated residents of Purok GK, Barangay Banago, after floodwaters rose to waist level or approximately 2 to 3 feet due to heavy rains brought by “Opong”.

Evacuated individuals were brought to Banago Elementary School as the designated evacuation center.

The Barangay Pahanocoy DRRMO in coordination with the Bureau of Fire Protection, conducted a rescue operation at Purok Hanap Buhay, Barangay Pahanocoy, after floodwaters also rose up to waist level.

Despite heavy rains, declogging operations by the City Engineer’s Office continued in Bata and Banago to clear drainages and waterways of trash and debris on Friday, the mayor said.
