Officials call for strict compliance of rules as Covid cases, deaths rise

Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson and Mayor Evelio Leonardia on Thursday, September 9, called on Negros Occidental and Bacolod City residents not to let their guards down as COVID-19 cases and deaths continue to rise.

New COVID-19 cases were 189 in Negros Occidental and 129 in Bacolod City on Thursday, the Department of Health reported.

The active COVID-19 cases in Negros Occidental were 1,779 and 1,121 in Bacolod City, the DOH added.

However, the Negros Occidental Provincial Incident Management Team report said the province had 1,521 active cases and six new deaths as of Thursday.

Lacson said he believes the surge in COVID-19 cases in Negros Occidental is being caused by the Delta variant

He called on Negrenses to continue to strictly observe health protocols and to get vaccinated.

Lacson also said he hopes more COVID-19 vaccines are sent to Negros Occidental.

Bacolod City received 40,000 doses of Sinovac and 9,360 doses of Pfizer vaccines on Thursday.

Leonardia said after a considerable period with only two-digit figures, Bacolod City registered a three-digit record at 130 fresh COVID-19 cases on Thursday.

“This development should serve as a reminder to all of us, we should not let our guard down and be complacent just because there was a downtrend of infections for close to two months,” he said.

“We are in for a roller-coaster ride as long as this pandemic continues and, therefore, vaccinated or unvaccinated, we should remain strictly compliant with the minimum health protocols – wearing of face mask all the time, and face shield when necessary, avoiding crowded places and staying long in closed venues, observing physical distancing and disinfecting, among others,” he said.

He said the Bacolod City Police Office has been directed to assist in tightening the implementation of minimum health protocols, and ensuring compliance of curfew hours, rules for business operations and the liquor ban.

“We will continue to step up our vaccination drive and adopt more interventions where they are applicable, to get more residents inoculated,” he added.*
