The Negrense Volunteers for Change Foundation has committed to help provide motorized fiberglass boats to Sipalay fishermen who lost their boats to the effects of the recent southwest monsoon winds and rain.
“We learned of the fishermen’s needs in an article in DIGICAST NEGROS”, NVC president Millie Kilayko said on Thursday, Sept. 19.
Kilayko said she got in touch with Sipalay Mayor Gina Montilla Lizares and she confirmed that 13 fishermen were affected.
“A dozen years ago, with support from our donors and partners, we provided 5,025 boats for fishermen in 10 provinces,” she said.
“This time, the need is in our own. We will deliver three for now. But we will try for more,” she added.
NVC has a soft spot for fishermen and farmers, the two poorest sectors of the country, she said.
“Whenever they have a need, we will never turn our backs on them as long as we can scrape enough resources to help them,” Kilayko said.*
