NPA rebel in encounter surrenders, PNP says

A rebel who was allegedly involved in the recent encounter in Brgy. Sag-ang, La Castellana, Negros Occidental, voluntarily surrendered to the police this week.

Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office spokesperson, Maj. Rhojn Darell Nigos, in a press conference Tuesday, January 23, said that an alleged member of the New People’s Army (NPA) involved in the encounter surrendered to La Castellana Mayor Rhummyla Mangilimutan and the municipal police station.

The rebel, whose name was not disclosed by the police, was a 71-year-old female from Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental, and a political instructor of the NPA group in La Castellana.

Nigos said that they are still checking the data of the surrenderee to determine if she has pending warrants of arrests.

The police also will look into the possibility of including the surrenderee in various government support programs for former rebels, including the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP).

The encounter in La Castellana resulted in the death of two alleged NPA members.*
