NPA claims responsibility for killing Escalante resident

The New People’s Army (NPA) has claimed responsibility for shooting a man to death outside his residence in Barangay Dian-ay, Escalante City, Negros Occidental, Thursday morning, Feb. 26.

The police earlier reported that a 42-year-old resident of Sitio Lumanab in Dian-ay was discovered lifeless at around 9:55 a.m. on Thursday.

Initial investigation showed that the victim’s sister found his body lying outside the house with visible gunshot wounds to the head and other parts of the body.

Police also recovered eight fired cartridge cases at the scene, believed to be from a .45 caliber firearm.

Authorities initially said the victim was shot by unidentified suspects and was declared dead on the spot.

The Roselyn Jean Pelle Command of the NPA in a statement Friday claimed responsibility for the killing.

The group alleged that the victim, whom it identified as Bigboy Ferrer, was a member of a gun-for-hire group and an alleged intelligence asset of the Philippine Army.

The NPA further accused the victim of being involved in multiple killings, livestock theft, and intimidation of residents in the area.

Police said they are continuing their investigation and have not yet confirmed the claims made by the NPA.

The case remains under active investigation to establish the motive and identify those responsible, the police said.*
