North Negros floods cause millions of pesos in damage

The floods that hit northern Negros Occidental late last week caused P26.9 million in damage to crops and other sources of livelihood, initial reports showed today, January 11.

The floods affected close to 100,000 residents in six cities and two towns, and destroyed 94 houses and damaged 968 others, updated reports today showed.

The floods also damaged roads and bridges, officials said.

Talisay, Silay and Victorias cities that are currently under states of calamity were the worst hit by the floods.

Provincial Agriculturist Japhet Masculino said initial reports show that the flash floods damaged 425.22 hectares of rice worth P11,498,776 in Talisay and Silay cities, and Manapla and Valladolid towns, and affected 570 farmers.

Damage to rice crops in Manapla was P189, 510, Talisay City – P72,662, Silay City – P3,749,490, and Valladolid – P7,487,113, he said, adding that more reports are still expected.

Damage to crops, animals and fishing vessels in Victorias City was P15,459,212, Mayor Francis Palanca said.

Meanwhile, the flood destroyed house increased to 92 with Silay City recording 51, Talisay City – 22, Victorias City -17 and Escalante City – 2.

Damaged housed hit 968 with 678 in Silay City, Talisay City – 207, Victorias City – 79, Cadiz City -2, and Sagay City- 2.

The floods also affected 99,482 persons in Talisay, Silay, Victorias, Cadiz, Sagay and Escalante cities and EB Magalona.*
