Negros youth group to launch solar energy project for Matabas Island

A Negros-based youth and environmental group is set to launch a community-driven solar energy initiative for Matabas Island, Brgy. Molocaboc, at the State University of Northern Negros, Sagay City, Negros Occidental, on Monday, January 26,

The Negrosanon Initiative for Climate and the Environment (NICE) said the project, dubbed “REPower Matabas,” aims to provide sustainable electrification to the island community while strengthening climate resilience, supporting education, improving livelihoods, and promoting women’s economic empowerment.

The official launch coincides with the observance of International Clean Energy Day and is expected to bring together youth leaders, civil society groups, educators, environmental advocates, and community partners from across Negros Occidental.

NICE said the initiative reflects its long-standing advocacy for people-powered climate action and just energy solutions, particularly for off-grid and island communities that remain vulnerable to energy insecurity.

Organizers said the launch will also highlight the role of clean energy access in addressing climate challenges and advancing inclusive development in Negros, as well as the importance of multisectoral collaboration in delivering sustainable community projects.*
