Negros Occidental coronavirus cases have dropped and provincial government-run hospitals, including those designated for COVID -19 patients, are not overwhelmed, Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz said Wednesday, August 4.

Negros Occidental will continue to vaccinate residents against COVID-19 and enforce strict health protocols to prevent new variants from causing a surge in local cases, he said.

The Department of Health on Tuesday reported that two new COVID-19 Alpha and Beta variant cases had been detected in Negros Occidental.

But Negros Occidental COVID-19 active cases dropped to 1,109 on Wednesday, a Provincial Incident Management Team report showed.

COVID-19 surges in some areas in Panay and Cebu have overwhelmed hospitals, with some no longer able to accept patients.

Diaz said under the Negros Occidental One Hospital Command System they are able to monitor the bed capacity of the provincial government-run hospitals on the computer with a click of a finger.

He said the One Hospital Command System data Wednesday showed that the Teresita L. Jalandoni Provincial Hospital (TLJPH) in Silay City that has a 198-bed capacity, had 82 beds vacant. The COVID-19 designated Cadiz City District Hospital had 63 available beds and the Valladolid District Hospital – 20, Diaz added.

Hospital beds still available at the Lorenzo Zayco District Hospital in Kabankalan City were 67, Gov. Valeriano M. Gatuslao Memorial Hospital in Himamaylan City – 55, Don Salvador Benedicto Memorial District Hospital in La Carlota City – 31 , Merceditas Montilla Xistrict Hospital in Sipalay City – 35, Ignacio L. Arroyo Sr. District Hospital in Isabela – 15 and the Eleuterio T. Decena Memorial Hospital in Hinoba-an – 19, Diaz said.

Other local government-run hospitals have also expressed interest in joining the One Hospital Command System of the province, which could later also include private hospitals, he added.

Diaz said improvements are also underway at the TLJPH to make it one of the best hospitals in Negros Occidental.

IN NEGROS ORIENTAL

In Negros Oriental COVID-19 cases and hospital bed occupancy have also been dropping, Dr. Liland Estacion, incident commander of the province’s Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases, said.

She said their average number of daily active infections has dropped from about 3,000 to 400, and hospital bed occupancy for COVID-19 cases dropped from 100 percent to about 35 percent.*
