Celebrating over a decade of supporting local livelihoods, the Negros Farmers Weekend Market marked its 13th year by bridging the gap between agriculture and the arts through a youth trade fair and community mural project on Saturday, March 14.

Established in March 2013, the weekend market at Magsaysay Avenue began as a corporate social responsibility project of DC Cruz Trading Corp. to provide local farmers and home chefs with a venue to market their vegetables and food.

Run through volunteerism, the weekend market allows the community to come together to shop for vegetables and bond over food.

Beyond commerce, they want the weekend market to become a venue for the youth to experience a caring community and showcase their talents, its owner Ruby Cruz said.

Future plans include screening films in the market grounds to help instill positive values in younger generations.

The anniversary trade fair was held by the Bacolod City College (BCC) Marketing Management Department, led by Dr. Maricar Y. Azucena.

In addition to the fair, BCC students shared their creative talents by painting a mural at the market.

The paint for the activity was donated by the Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry, headed by Julian Carbon.

The mural, according to Cruz, serves as a visual representation of that enduring community spirit at the weekend market.*
