The provincial government will set up an artificial intelligence (AI) education training hub at the soon-to-open new campus of the Negros Occidental Language and Information Technology Center (NOLITC) in Talisay City.
Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz II said on Wednesday, April 9, that the province will pioneer the program at the new campus, and cascade it in every district as part of the innovative and transformative education agenda of Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson.
“NOLITC will be the hub for AI training for teachers and students in the province,” he said .
Ma. Cristina Orbecido, NOLITC vocational school administrator, said they will introduce micro-credential courses focusing on a technology-driven education system and solutions such as AI.
“We are working to meet global standards and address the manpower needs of the industry. This is another innovative strategy that NOLITC intends to pilot in the new campus,” she said.
Last week, the provincial government hosted the 1st International AI Education Summit, the first in the Visayas region organized by the NOLITC in collaboration with East West International Education Specialist Inc., featuring expert speakers from the United States, Poland, Belgium and Singapore.
Dennis Layug, president and chief executive officer of East West International, said AI is not only a tool, but also a spark igniting the education sector.
He said NOLITC will be their core partner in the implementation of micro-credential courses in Negros Occidental through upskilling, reskilling, and retooling with cutting-edge technological skills to drive the future of education.
“This initiative aims to equip educators, students, and professionals with emerging digital competencies, fostering innovation, digital transformation, and future-ready learning solutions across the province,” Layug said.
He said integrating advanced technologies such as AI, data analytics, and immersive learning tools would lead to a progressive and technology-driven education system that meets global standards while addressing local industry demands.
Fifth District Board Member Rita Gatuslao, chairperson of the committee on education, said she will support legislations intended to promote AI education in the province.
“AI is here to stay, and our choice is clear. We can either be passive recipients of change or proactive architects of a future where AI works for the common good. As public servants and leaders, we must champion AI adoption that is ethical, inclusive, and people-centered,” she added.*PNA
