NegOcc steps up drive vs. dengue in barangays provincewide: PHO’

The Negros Occidental campaign against dengue, which cases have risen by 421.6 percent this year, has been intensified in barangays provincewide.

The Department of Health’s “Alas Kwatro Kontra Mosquito” campaign is now being implemented in every barangay daily, Dr. Girlie Pinongan, provincial health officer, said Friday, Feb. 28.

Barangay residents have been asked to clean their surroundings every 4 p.m. and to remove breeding areas of mosquitoes, which are dengue carriers, she said.

Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water in bottles, pails, old tires, and canals.

The Provincial Health Office has also been providing larvicides to help eliminate mosquito breeding areas in canals and gutters.

Larvicides kill mosquito larvae and pupae before they can grow into biting adult mosquitoes.

Pinongan they are also encouraging employees in all government officers to clean their surroundings to remove breeding areas of mosquitoes.

Dengue cases in Negros Occidental have increased by 421.65 percent, the Provincial Health Office reported on Wednesday.

There were 1,012 dengue cases and six deaths reported in Negros Occidental from January 1 to Feb. 22.

There are 818 more cases this year compared to 194 in the same period in 2024, the PHO report showed.

Bago City still has the most number of cases at 209 and is continuing to step up its clean up drive, Pinongan said.*
