Negros Occidental has recorded 137 cases of leptospirosis with eight deaths from January 1 to September 20, Dr. Girlie Pinongan, Provincial Health Officer, said on Thursday, October 2.
Bago City leads the list with the highest number of recorded cases at 17. It’s followed by Cadiz City, San Carlos City, Silay City, and Kabankalan City, each reporting nine cases.
Pinongan said that her office has not monitored any new leptospirosis cases stemming from the recent floods.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease caused by the Leptospira bacteria, primarily transmitted through contact with water, soil, or food contaminated with the urine of rats and other infected animals.
Pinongan urged residents exposed to floodwaters to visit their local health centers to receive prophylaxis (preventive medication) to guard against the disease.
She added that rescuers are being given prophylaxis to ensure their safety while performing their duties.*
