There have been 21 fireworks-related injuries in the Negros Island Region from Dec. 21 to Sunday, Dec. 29, the Department of Health-NIR reported.
Negros Occidental had the most number of injuries at 14 followed by Bacolod City with three and two each in Negros Oriental and Siquijor.
Twelve cases involved blast/burn injuries without amputation and nine were eye injuries, the DOH-NIR reported.
DOH-NIR reiterated its call for the public to usher in the New Year safely by using alternative noise sources such as drums, pots, or karaoke with family and friends.
“Supervise children and other young people to avoid using fireworks, watch a community fireworks display from your LGU, and be prepared and make sure you have a first aid kit in case of injury due to fireworks”, the DOH NIR also said.
It also called on the public to report those using and selling illegal fireworks such as boga, 5-star, and piccolo, not to use fireworks, and not to pick or light fireworks scattered on the road.
Keep poison and gunpowder products such as small firecrackers (watusi) away from children because they can inhale them, the DOH NIR also said.*
