The Negros Occidental provincial government donated PHP2 million to Sarangani province, which incurred widespread damage after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off its coast on June 8.
“This is to help in their recovery from the earthquake,” the Provincial Board, headed by Vice Governor Jose Benito Alonso, said in a statement on Tuesday, August 25.
Alonso, who sits as the acting governor while Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson is on leave, led the turnover of the symbolic check to Sarangani officials, led by Vice Governor Danny Martinez, during the two province’s intergovernmental learning exchange at the Capitol Social Hall here on Monday afternoon.
Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz II assured the team from Sarangani that they have a reliable ally in Negros Occidental, adding that no local government unit should ever feel alone or isolated in whatever situation it faces.
“We shared our best practices, gave financial assistance to the victims of earthquake and assisted the Province of Sarangani,” Diaz said.
Negros Occidental’s various departments and offices shared presentations of the province’s best practices in local legislation, economic enterprise, tourism, disaster preparedness and environmental protection.
Last year, the Negros Occidental provincial government also extended a financial assistance of PHP2 million to Bogo City, the worst-hit local government unit by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that rocked Cebu province on Sept. 30. *PNA
