NegOcc floods cause P151M in agri damage

The recent heavy rains and flooding that hit Negros Occidental caused P151.2 million in damage to agriculture, an updated report released by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, showed.

Damage to rice, high value commercial crops and corn was P146,184,459, fisheries – P1,781,361 and livestock – P3,314,151, the report said.

Forty six houses were destroyed and 989 were damaged, the PDRRMC also reported.

The heavy rains and flooding in Negros Occidental from Sept. 13 to Sept. 17 were caused by the southwest monsoon that was enhanced by tropical storms “Ferdie” and “Helen” and tropical depression Gener.

The foul weather affected 56,807 families with 207,197 members, the PDRRC report said.

The PDRRMC also said there were 492 persons remaining in evacuation centers as of Monday.

San Enrique, Hinigaran and Valladolid towns, and La Carlota City are under a state of calamity.*
