A 62-year-old motorcycle driver was killed after his motorcycle collided with a tricycle at the national highway in Barangay Binicuil, Kabankalan City, early Tuesday morning, Feb. 3.

Police identified the motorcycle driver as alias “Melo,” a resident of Eroreco Subdivision in Brgy. Mandalagan, Bacolod City, while the tricycle was driven by alias “Chris,” 43, a fish vendor from Brgy. Aguisan, Himamaylan City, with alias “Lyn,” 36, as his passenger.

The Kabankalan police said the accident happened at around 3:40 a.m. along Guanzon Street while both vehicles were traveling from north to south toward Kabankalan City proper.

Investigation showed that the tricycle was using the outer lane of the highway when it encountered an oncoming vehicle with high-beam headlights.

Police said the motorcycle, which was traveling in the same direction, accidentally hit the rear of the tricycle, causing both vehicles to fall onto the pavement.

Further investigation revealed that the tricycle’s tail light was not functioning, and an improvised light assembly attached to it was also not working at the time of the collision.

All injured individuals were rushed to the Lorenzo D. Zayco District Hospital in Kabankalan where Melo was declared dead.

The tricycle driver and the vehicle were placed under the custody of Kabankalan City Police Station for proper disposition as the investigation continues.*
