Motorcycle driver dies after falling into canal

A carpenter died after he was thrown into a roadside canal when he lost control of his motorcycle along the national road of Barangay San Jose, Manjuyod town, Negros Oriental, late Monday night, July 7.

The Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office reported that the 36-year-old driver was declared dead at the Bais City Hospital.

His 28-year-old backrider, who is a person with disability (PWD), sustained minor injuries.

The two were reportedly on their way to Bais City after leaving a drinking session. They were riding ahead of their companions who were on a separate motorcycle.

Witnesses said the driver was seen zigzagging along the road, suggesting that he may have been under the influence of alcohol.

Moments later, he lost control of the motorcycle, causing it to crash onto the cemented road and throwing him into a nearby roadside canal.

Their companions immediately stopped to assist them and called for help.

Responders rushed the victims to the hospital, but the driver did not survive due to severe head injuries.

The motorcycle involved is now in the custody of the Manjuyod police for proper documentation.

Authorities classified the crash as a self-inflicted accident, with no other vehicles involved.*
