
A 33-year-old man was shot dead by an on-duty security guard at the Kabankalan New Public Market in Brgy. 1, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, on Monday afternoon, Jan. 19.
Police identified the victim as a single, jobless male believed to be suffering from mental illness and a resident of Sitio Balisong, Brgy. Orong in Kabankalan.
The suspect was identified as alias “Job,” a 35-year-old married security guard from Brgy. Inayawan, Cauayan.
The Kabankalan City Police Station said the incident happened at around 4:45 p.m. after the victim allegedly turned off the main power switch of the public market.
Police said the suspect went to inspect the area and ordered the victim to leave, but the latter allegedly became unruly.
Investigation showed the suspect attempted to apprehend the victim, who tried to flee and continued to resist when caught.
Police said the suspect then drew his issued 9mm pistol and shot the victim several times, hitting different parts of his body.
The victim was rushed to the Lorenzo Zayco District Hospital but was later pronounced dead by the attending physician.
The suspect voluntarily surrendered to the Kabankalan police after the incident and turned over his issued firearm for proper disposition.
Police said a follow-up investigation is ongoing, including efforts to locate the victim’s family.*
