The scene of the crime in Kabankalan*

A 39-year-old man was hacked dead by his stepfather in Barangay Tapi, Kabankalan City, on Monday morning, Nov. 17, following what police described as a misunderstanding over a bamboo fence.

The victim, Edcel Gonzales, a driver and resident of the barangay, was declared dead at the Kabankalan District Hospital.

The police identified the suspect as Delmar Quinto, 50, a farmer and Gonzales’ stepfather.

The Kabankalan police said they received a call from Barangay Kagawad Kurt Palacio at around 9 a.m. reporting a hacking incident in Purok Palangga.

Based on the statements of the victim’s mother, Medicilla Gonzales, her son arrived home from work at around 7 p.m. on November 16 and cut a bamboo fence along his path because it was blocking his way to their house.

When Quinto arrived later and saw the cut fence, he confronted his wife about it and was told that the victim was responsible.

The suspect allegedly became angry and left.

The following morning, Medicilla said she saw Quinto walking toward the barangay health center, bloodied and holding a bladed weapon.

She rushed home and found her son lying lifeless on the ground.

Barangay officials brought both the suspect and the victim to the hospital.

Quinto was later referred to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City for further treatment.*
