Man dies after eating freshwater turtle

A 47-year-old man died after he allegedly ate a snake-necked turtle in Sitio Can-amo, Barangay 6 Poblacion, Moises Padilla, Negros Occidental on Thursday, Feb. 11.

The victim, identified by authorities only as alias “Daku,” reportedly consumed the turtle along with several persons, the Moises Padilla Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported.

Responding personnel said the victim later complained of chest pain and difficulty breathing.

Authorities provided supplemental oxygen and rushed him to the Municipal Health Infirmary, but he lost his pulse and was later declared dead despite resuscitation efforts.

The snake-necked turtle is a freshwater species that feeds on small fish, insects, earthworms, and frogs.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of death, and it remains unclear whether the consumption of the turtle directly caused the victim’s condition.

Wildlife experts note that freshwater turtles are not generally considered poisonous, but they may carry harmful bacteria or toxins depending on their habitat or preparation, which can pose health risks when consumed.*
