The Land Transportation Office-Negros Island Region has issued a show cause order against a Philippine Coast Guard member involved in a fatal road crash along Araneta Street in Brgy. Sum-ag, Bacolod City, on Oct. 9.
LTO-NIR said personnel of its Intelligence and Investigation Unit served the order Monday afternoon at the Philippine Coast Guard office in Pulupandan, Negros Occidental.
The driver was not present at the facility at the time, so the order was received on his behalf by designated Coast Guard personnel.
LTO investigators explained the contents and legal implications of the order to the receiving officer for proper transmission to the driver.
The show cause order stemmed from the early morning collision involving a pickup truck driven by the Coast Guard member and a motorcycle with sidecar.
Police earlier reported that the motorcycle driver was killed while his passenger was injured after the pickup collided with their vehicle and subsequently struck the rear of a passenger jeepney.
The crash happened at about 12:45 a.m. along Araneta Street in Brgy. Sum-ag.
Initial police investigation indicated that the pickup was traveling northbound when it allegedly failed to notice the motorcycle ahead amid heavy rain.
The motorcycle driver sustained fatal injuries and was found with no signs of life, while his passenger was brought to a hospital for treatment.
The pickup driver was later taken into police custody for proper disposition.
LTO-NIR said the driver has been directed to submit a formal explanation on why administrative sanctions should not be imposed in connection with the incident.
Possible administrative penalties may include the suspension or revocation of his driver’s license, subject to the result of the proceedings and due process.
LTO-NIR added it will continue enforcing transportation laws and pursuing accountability regardless of a motorist’s position or affiliation.*
