Leptospirosis cases up104.4%, dengue down 44% in 2023: CHO

Leptospirosis cases increased by more than 100 percent, while dengue cases were down by 44 percent in Bacolod City in 2023 compared to 2022, the City Health Office reported on Monday, January.

Leptospirosis cases went up by 104.4 percent in 2023, from 45 cases in 2022 to 92 cases last year, the CHO reported.

Of the 92 residents hit with leptospirosis, 16 died.

Barangays Mansilingan and Estefania had the highest number of leptospirosis cases at seven each, while Bata and Vista Alegre had six each.

The CHO said that 70 to 80 percent of the cases were caused by contact with contaminated water, while the most common reason for complications and death were delayed health-seeking behavior and denial of the infection.

Meanwhile, dengue cases in the city decreased by 44.2 percent last year, from 1,011 cases in 2022 to 569 cases in 2023.

Of the 569 recorded cases, there were three deaths.

The CHO said that most identified mosquito breeding places were found in collected water in uncovered containers inside and outside houses.

There were also 335 suspected and confirmed cases of cholera, and 312 confirmed and suspected cases of Rotavirus in Bacolod last year, the CHO said.*
