Leni gets 4.5-kilometer festive pink send-off

Supporters of Vice President Leni Robredo lined the 4.5-kilometer road leading to the Bacolod-Silay Airport to give her a festive send-off on Wednesday morning, May 4.

About 500 vehicles joined the stationary caravan along J. Pitong Ledesma Street in Silay City leading to the airport, Pinky Mirano Ocampo, Laban Leni Negros Occidental spokesperson, said.

The vehicles were decorated with pink ribbons, flaglets, stars and Robredo tarpaulins. Her supporters clad in pink danced to her campaign jingles on the side of the road, and some also brought their dogs that were dressed for the occasion.

Robredo waved and shook hands as her van drove pass her cheering supporters, some of whom were nuns.

She thanked her Negros supporters for their send-off. “It is an honor to have your trust and support,” Robredo said in a Facebook post.

The vice president was in Negros Occidental for a rally in Bago City and a People’s Proclamation in Bacolod City Tuesday night, May 3.

Despite a recent Pulse Asia survey showing Robredo in second place in the race for the presidency, the senatorial bets on her team in interviews Tuesday night were upbeat about her victory.

Senatorial candidate Chel Diokno said “the campaign has been going great, it has generated something more than just political slogans, it has generated a movement brought about by the spirit of volunteerism… with the youth as the driving force”.

“We will see what will happen on May 9, to all who have said they will win, let’s wait for the actual voting,” he said.

Senatorial candidate Neri Colmenares said the momentum is there and they are quite confident that it will bring Robredo and her runningmate Francis Pangilinan to victory.

“It Leni wins many of us in her senatorial slate will also win,” he said.

Senatorial candidate Alex Lacson, who is from Negros Occidental, said “the actual survey is on May 9.”

“Let’s not give in to surveys because surveys are not a good basis for a candidate’s qualification. There are some candidates today, especially in the Senate, whose intentions and character are questionable and others have been charged and are tainted with corruption but they are still leading in the surveys, ” Lacson said.

Senatorial candidates should not be voted into office based on popularity only because they lack knowledge or the capacity for work in the Senate, he said.*
