Labor groups will call for the rejection of direct sugar importation at a labor solidarity forum in Bacolod City on Labor Day, May 1.
The National Congress of Unions in the Sugar Industry of the Philippines (NACUSIP), General Alliance of Workers Association (GAWA), Congress of Independent Organizations (CIO) and the Philippine Agricultural Commercial Industrial Workers Union (PACIWU) have consolidated as NGCP, a press release from the group said Friday, April 28.
They will call for the scrapping and rejection of the direct sugar importation as proposed by the industry manufacturers in the food and beverage industry in a letter to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., it said.
The labor sector will also pass a resolution vehemently opposing the proposal because it would be a death blow to the sugar industry, the press release said.
They will also bestow a posthumous award to the late Zoilo De la Cruz Jr. for his invaluable and outstanding contribution to the labor sector in the country.
It is estimated that more than 50 labor leaders will attend the forum.*
