Families displaced by Typhoon ‘Tino’ are being moved to a single, centralized evacuation site in La Castellana, Negros Occidental, to streamline management and services, Mayor Añejo Nicor said on Sunday, Jan. 25.
The 978 families, who lost their homes during the storm, are being relocated to a municipal site where tents are currently being established.
Nicor explained that the move is necessary as many survivors lived in high-risk areas that have since been declared “no-build zones” for public safety.
The relocation also allows local schools—which had been serving as temporary shelters—to be vacated, clearing the way for students to resume face-to-face classes, he added.*
