Mayor Rhummyla Mangilimutan is appealing for more help from the provincial and national governments as the number of La Castellana residents being preemptively evacuated from the 4 to 6-kilometer Kanlaon Volcano danger zone increase.

The municipal government is running out of funds and needs help to sustain the needs of evacuees, she said on Monday, Sept. 16.

Kanlaon had two volcanic earthquakes and spewed 10,880 tons of sulfur dioxide from 12 a.m. Sunday to 12 a.m. Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

Phivolcs has urged the preemptive evacuation amid the possibility that the volcano could erupt anytime.

As of Monday evening there were 902 families with 2,765 members who had been preemptively evacuated from barangays Masulog, Cabagnaan, Biak na Bato and Mansalanao in La Castellana, Mangilimutan said.

Their preemptive evacuation target is 4,000 La Castellana residents, she said.

Mayor Rex Jalandoon said they have also started evacuating residents in four remote sitios of Barangay Yubo, La Carlota City, that are within the danger zone and cannot be reached by vehicles.

Jalandoon did not have the total number of evacuees yet on Monday.

Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas said they have preemptively evacuated 173 families with 533 members in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, as of Monday.*
