The return home of 61 families with a total of 225 individuals who were displaced from Sitio Guintubdan, La Carlota City, due to Kanlaon Volcano’s unrest will start August 14, the city government announced.
The decision of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council led by Mayor Jose Luis “Joelu” Jalandoni comes after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) lowered the alert status for Kanlaon Volcano from Level 3 to Level 2.
To support the returning families, several aid packages will be distributed. Each internally displaced person (IDP) will receive food boxes, galvanized steel sheets to reinforce their shelters, and cash assistance, the city government announced in a post on its Facebook page.
In a proactive move toward long-term resilience, the council is also advancing plans for a permanent relocation center for residents living in high-risk areas.*
