A drop in kindergarten enrollees has been observed this school year, Ian Arnold Arnaez, spokesman of the Department of Education – Division of Negros Occidental, said Tuesday, August 6.

The drop in kindergarten enrollment in many schools could be the effect of family planning, he said.

Couples may have also slowed down on having children in order to work to earn enough for their families, Arnaez said.

Leaners must be 5 years old in order to enroll in kindergarten, he said.

Enrollees from kindergarten to high school in the Division of Negros Occidental were 308,143, with 290,500 from public schools and 17,643 from private schools as of Tuesday, Arnaez said.

Late enrollees are still being accepted, he added.

There were 325,000 enrolled in the Division of Negros Occidental last school year, he added.*
