Kanlaon damage to crops, fisheries hits P129.7M

Damage to crops and fisheries in two cities and one town in Negros Occidental affected by Kanlaon Volcano’s eruption has reached P129,758,168, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturists reported.

The OPA report submitted to Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson on Thursday, Jan. 16, reported damage to crops and fisheries in La Castellana, Bago City and La Carlota City barangays affected by Kanlaon’s ash and sulfur emissions.

The hardest hit were high value commercial crops with damage placed at P124,931,974 affecting 1,168 farmers tiling 450.34 hectares of land.

Damage to rice was P4,192,837 affecting 299 farmers, and P503,352 to corn affecting 15 farmers.

Damage to fisheries was P130,005, the OPA reported.*
