
A 20-year-old woman was found dead after apparently drowning in a river in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, on New Year’s Day, Jan. 1.
Police said the victim’s body was discovered at around 6 p.m. along the river in Purok Paghida-et, Brgy Tampalon.
They identified the victim as a single woman and a resident of Purok Buslogan, Brgy. Camingawan, Kabankalan.
The victim’s mother reported that her daughter was last seen at around 2 p.m. on December 31 after she was instructed to deliver food to her grandmother.
The victim failed to return home after several hours, prompting her mother to conduct a search.
Police said the victim usually used a bamboo raft to cross the river to her grandmother’s house.
At around 5:30 p.m. on Jan 1, the victim’s mother received a call from a neighbor advising her to proceed to the river in Brgy. Tampalon.
The victim’s body was found floating in the river when the mother arrived at around 6 p.m., and she identified her daughter based on the clothes she was wearing.
With the assistance of barangay authorities, the victim was brought to Lorenzo D. Zayco District Hospital, where she was declared dead by the attending physician.
Police said the victim’s mother believes her daughter may have accidentally fallen into the river and drowned.*
