Ilog resident found dead in Kabankalan river

A man found floating in a river in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, on Sunday, Sept. 21 has been identified by his wife, the police confirmed.

The victim was John Audrey Celso Magsila, 25, a painter and a resident of Purok Cordova, Brgy. Bocana, Ilog.

Magsila was earlier reported as unidentified when his body, already in an advanced state of decomposition, was discovered around 12:13 p.m. Sunday at Hacienda Biaren, Brgy. Linao, Police Cap. Sammy Gasataya, Kabankalan City Police deputy chief, said on Monday.

Gasataya said investigation showed that three days before he was found, Magsila allegedly struck his workmate with a shovel and, possibly out of nervousness, jumped from the Camugao Bridge.

He may have been carried away by the river’s strong current until his body surfaced, he added.

A minor who was fishing with friends saw the cadaver floating and, with the group, pulled it to the riverbank before informing barangay officials, who later reported the discovery to police.

Magsila’s body was later brought to a funeral home for post-mortem examination.*
