Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson refused to name the presidential candidate he will support, saying he will focus on his campaign.

“I think people already have an idea whom my choice will be,” said Lacson on Tuesday, February 8, which was the start of the national campaign period.

The choice of the governor is widely believed to be Vice President Leni Robredo, whom he was seen with during her visit to southern Negros Occidental in December.

“On the day of the elections, I will vote for the candidate whom I can trust,” was all Lacson would say Tuesday.

Lacson also said if his presidential choice arrives in the province and he is invited to join that person he most likely will appear.

He will respect the choices of other public officials in Negros Occidental, Lacson also said.

Vice Governor Jeffrey Ferrer said on Monday that he and about 85 percent of the public officials of Negros Occidental are supporting the presidential bid of Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Ferrer also said talks were ongoing with officials of the first district of Negros Occidental. Lacson is a former mayor of San Carlos City.

It is possible that he and the current mayor of San Carlos may have a different choice for president, Lacson said.

Lacson, who belongs to the Nationalist People’s Coalition, said his party has not given any instructions on whom to support.

“I don’t know if they will even make a choice,” he said.*
