House majority will approve poll postponement – Ferrer

Rep. Juliet Marie Ferrer*

Rep. Juliet Marie Ferrer (Neg. Occ., 4th District) is positive that the House of Representatives will approve the postponement of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) set on December 5.

However, she could not speak for the Senate, Ferrer said on Monday, August 1.

Ferrer was one of the first to file a bill in the Lower House seeking the postponement of the BSKE to May 2023.

She filed House Bill 121 because “we have just concluded the national and local elections on May 9, and the government will have to prepare for the Barangay and SK elections in December 2022. Instead of spending on another electoral exercise, the government can direct its resources to COVID-19 related programs and help rebuild our economy,” Ferrer said.

Ferrer said numerous representatives filed similar bills, which will be consolidated by the   Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms.

There are some opposed to the postponement of the BSKE but the majority of the members of the House are for it, she added.

Ferrer has also filed House Bill 122 for the creation of Negros Occidental Heart, Lung and Kidney Center but did not specify where the new facility will be located.

At present, there is an increasing number of residents in the province of Negros Occidental diagnosed of certain heart, lung and kidney illnesses, she said.

The current medical facilities in Negros Occidental do not provide for specialized treatment of these illnesses, the nearest hospital facilities that can treat these illnesses are in Cebu City or lloilo City, Ferrer said.

Ferrer has been appointed chairperson of the House Committee on Justice but she is waiting   for the appointment of all of its members before it can be organized.

The committee will hear bills on the creation of more courts in various parts of the country, she said.*
