The House Committee on Social Services approved a bill seeking to fully institutionalize the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Tuesday, Feb. 10, , marking a significant step toward permanent poverty alleviation, Rep. Mercedes Alvarez (Neg. Occ., 6th District), said.
House Bill No. 3785 authored by Alvarez aims to ensure that the program remains a staple of national social protection, providing consistent resources for marginalized Filipinos to build resilient livelihoods.
Alvarez said the bill is designed to move beyond temporary assistance by providing citizens with the tools for self-sufficiency.
“They say, give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for life,” Alvarez said.
“This is why the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) of the DSWD is so close to my heart. It empowers people… by giving them the skills and opportunities to improve their lives”, she said.
“Today, the bill was approved by the Committee on Social Services. It is just the first step, but it is already a small win. We’ll keep pushing until this measure becomes law”, she added.*
