Heavy rainfall expected, Bacolod, other Negros LGUs suspend classes

Bacolod City and several other local government units (LGUs) in Negros Occidental have cancelled classes amid forecasted heavy rainfall by the state weather bureau.

Classes at all levels in public and private schools in Bacolod City are suspended on Monday, Nov. 24, due to the Low Pressure Area that has developed within the Philippine Area of Responsibility and the corresponding orange heavy rainfall warning, Mayor Greg Gasataya said in an executive order.

Schools are encouraged to shift to modular distance learning performance tasks and projects to ensure that learning competencies are met, he said.

The city remains fully prepared to respond and extend assistance in the event of any emergency, Gasataya said.

The rains will be triggered by a Shear Line and Low Pressure Area (LPA), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in an advisory issued at 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23.

On Monday afternoon to Tuesday afternoon there will be heavy to intense rain (100-200 mm) over Negros Occidental, Pagasa said.

Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday afternoon moderate to heavy (50-100 mm) over Negros Occidental is also forecasted.

The public disaster risk reduction and management offices are advised to take all necessary measures to protect life and property, Pagasa said.

Classes have also been suspended in La Carlota City, Silay City, Himamaylan City, Moises Padilla, EB Magalona, Don Salvador Benedicto, Manapla and La Castellana on Monday.

Classes in Isabela and Hinigaran will be suspended starting noon Monday until further notice.
