Guv gets first peek of Elon’s satellite internet, signs MOU with AcadArena

Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson got a first peek of the highly-anticipated internet service provided by Starlink, a satellite-based internet service provider by SpaceX, early this week.

A day before Starlink went live in the Philippines, the low-earth orbit satellite internet technology was presented by Mark Garvey Candella, Chief Strategy Officer of AcadArena, to Lacson at the Capitol in Bacolod City.

Candella was in the province for the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the provincial government through the Negros Occidental Language and Information Technology Center (NOLITC) to promote Esports Education.

AcadArena is a leading organization for Campus Gaming and Esports Education in the Philippines and Southeast Asia, a press release from NOLITC said Thursday.

Both parties agreed to commit to establish collaborative networks that lead to student and faculty mobility, research collaboration, joint activities, scholarship grants, curricular enhancement, and policy formulation, among others, it said.

Also, they committed to engage in regular discussions for the purpose of identifying activities that will leverage the capabilities and resources of AcadArena, student organizations, esports and gaming-oriented business firms, and leading institutions of higher education to the mutual benefit of all parties.

NOLITC and AcadArena will also collaborate in promoting Digital Literacy and Digital Citizenship in the province through campus gaming.

Present during the signing was Lacson, Candella, Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz, NOLITC School Administrator Dr. Ma. Cristina Orbecido, Program Coordinator for Scholarship Partnership Isaiah San Miguel, Business Development Officer Earon Villamora, NOLITC Training Coordinator Jan Parson Hernia and Acting Registrar Cely Trio.*
