Guv eyes state of calamity, aid delivered to evacuees

Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said a declaration of a state of calamity in Negros Occidental is being considered following the eruption of Kanlaon Volcano on Monday, Dec. 9.

The governor said a declaration of a state of calamity would allow the provincial government to release its Quick Response Fund.

The governor reminded residents in affected areas to follow evacuation orders.

“Wear a mask, goggles, and protective clothing. Stay indoors, avoid hazard zones,” he said.

The provincial government has sent buses to aid in the evacuation of residents, he said.

The provincial government has also provided hot meals to evacuees is Bago and La Castellana, and sent cages to Bago for the evacuation of animals, Irene Belle Ploteña, Provincial Disaster Management Program Division head, said.

Mayor Raymund Tongson and the Himamaylan City DRRMO convoy also went to La Castellana town to assist in the evacuation of residents affected by the eruption.

Also providing assistance were Rep. Emilio Yulo III (Neg. Occ., 5th District) and Vice Gov. Jeffrey Ferrer.

The Negrense Volunteers Change also delivered 3,120 Mingo Meals as emergency relief to 760 families at the La Castellana South Elementary School, St. Vincent High School and La Castellana North Elementary School evacuation centers in La Castellana town on Monday, NVC president Millie Kilayko said.*
