Negros Occidental’s economy in 2025 will be affected by the drop in millgate sugar prices, Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said on Thursday, Jan. 2.

He called on the leaders of the Sugar Regulatory Administration and all sugar federations to set aside their differences and work together to solve the problem of very low prices.

“If this continues, this will affect the economy of Negros,” he said.

“The problem is the planters can’t understand why the prices of sugar are dropping because if you follow supply and demand supposed to be the prices should be steady from last year or higher,” Lacson said.

“My understanding is there is too much refined sugar in the market, there are some sugar mills that are not refining because they cannot sell the refined sugar,” he said.*
