Guv appeals for more prayers as Mt. Kanlaon magma rises

Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson on Tuesday, Feb. 11, reiterated his call for more prayers that a Kanlaon Volcano eruption will not have a disastrous effect on Negrenses.

Lacson was reacting to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology report that the rising magma at Kanlaon Volcano is now less than five kilometers from the crater.

It could lead to slow lava flow out of the crater, a dangerous explosive eruption or the magma rise could stop, Teresito Bacolcol, Phivolcs director, said on Monday.

Lacson reiterated that Phivolcs has warned that a culminating activity to Kanlaon’s unrest will occur before it calms down.

“I’ve always asked for divine intervention but if that is not possible then we will just have to be ready for the culminating activity of Kanlaon,” he said.

Fortunately for now we are still at Alert Level 3 at Kanlaon meaning status quo, he said.

If a major eruption happens immediate evacuation will be needed, there is no other choice, Lacson said.

“I just hope it will not be disastrous,” he said.*
