‘Goring’ affects 91,236 in Negros, Bacolod, damage hits P115.6M

Flooding caused by Typhoon “Goring” induced rains has affected 91,236 Negros Occidental and Bacolod residents, destroyed houses, rendered roads impassable, and caused damage initially estimated at P115 million as of Tuesday, August 29.

The families affected by the heavy rains and floods for three straight days were 28,353 with 91,236 members in Negros Occidental and Bacolod City.

There were 25,103 individuals in evacuation centers as of Tuesday afternoon.

The floods destroyed 16 houses and damaged 41 in Negros Occidental, Irene Bel Ploteña Provincial Disaster Management Program Division (PDMPD) head, said.

Partial reports also placed damage to livestock at P1,170,500 and agriculture and fisheries at P114,441,042 for a total P115,611, 542, she said.

There were 25,709 families with 82,594 members affected by the flooding in 10 towns and six cities in Negros Occidental as of 5 p.m. Tuesday, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council reported.

Of the total affected, 18,322 evacuated from their homes, the report said.

The areas hit by floods and heavy rain were Bago City, Pulupandan, San Enrique, Pontevedra, Valladolid, Himamaylan City, Murcia, Hinigaran, Binalbagan, Silay City, La Carlota City, Isabela, Talisay City, La Castellana, EB Magalona and San Carlos City.

Suspended were classes in 26 Negros Occidental LGUs and work in government offices in 14 towns and cities on Tuesday.

Two more landslides were also reported in Don Salvador Benedicto.

Salvador Benedicto Mayor Marxlen dela Cruz reminded drivers passing through his town to put on the headlights of their vehicles as the fog was affecting visibility.

They should not drive fast because the roads are slippery, he said.

A San Carlos City official also warned that based on their initial assessment and monitoring of the upper portion of the Ecotranslink Highway, there are signs of an active landslide or rockslide caused by high saturation of water along its steep slopes.

Motorists and road users are advised to take precautionary measures while traveling through the Ecotranslink Highway, Joe Recalex Alingasa Jr., San Carlos City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officer, said.

IN BACOLOD

In Bacolod City 2,644 families with 8,642 members were affected by the flooding in 31 barangays, the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office reported.

There were 6,781 of those affected staying in evacuation centers as of 4 p.m. Tuesday, the CDRRMO reported.*
