Former Himamaylan mayor passes away

Former Himamaylan City mayor Carminia “Mencit” Bascon was a public official for 24 years.*

Former Himamaylan City mayor Carminia “Mencit” Bascon passed away, after suffering from a severe bout of pneumonia, at the Riverside Medical Center in Bacolod City at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Bascon, 88, succumbed to multiple organ failure, her son former Himamaylan mayor Agustin Ernesto “Tinto” Bascon, said.

Bascon served as mayor of Himamaylan for 12 years, the first term being when it was a municipality and the three other terms when it was converted into a city.

She also was a Himamaylan vice mayor for nine years and a councilor for three years.

Himamaylan Mayor Raymund Tongson said “On behalf of the city and the people of Himamaylan, we deeply mourn the passing of former Himamaylan City Mayor Mencit Bascon. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bascon family during this time. May her soul rest in peace”.

“The Our Lady of the Snows Parish community mourns the passing of a remarkable leader and compassionate servant,” a post on the Facebook page of the Himamaylan parish said.

“Mrs. Bascon’s unwavering dedication to Himamaylan and her profound love for its people have left an indelible mark in the hearts of many. Her selfless service and vision for progress continue to inspire generations,” it said.

“As a pillar of strength, she was not only a public servant but also a woman of faith and integrity, guiding her leadership with values rooted in humility and care. Her legacy of genuine public service and commitment to the common good will always be cherished and remembered,” it added.

Her wake will be at the Our Lady of the Snows Parish Church in Himamaylan City on Wednesday and Thursday, and at the Acropolis Gardens in Barangay Bata, Bacolod City, on Friday and Saturday, her daughter Mel Bascon said.

A mass will be held at 6 p.m. Friday and 6:30 p.m. on Saturday during her wake at the Acropolis.

She will be buried after a 9 a.m. mass on Sunday at the Bacolod Memorial Park.

The mayor was married to the late hotelier Oscar “Dodong” Bascon.

She is survived by her children Carmela “Mel “Bascon, Tom Bascon, Agustin Ernesto “Tinto” Bascon and Marili Bascon Gonzaga.*
