Floods hit 28,722 in Negros, Bacolod, one missing, more houses destroyed

Floods brought on by Severe Tropical Storm “Paeng” hit 28,722 residents, 11,173 of whom sought shelter in evacuation centers, in Negros Occidental and Bacolod City on Friday and Saturday, October 28 to 29.

Many began returning home when the waters subsided on Saturday.

A fisherman is missing, houses and pumpboats were destroyed, and cemeteries were flooded.

There were 6,285 families with 27, 156 individuals affected by the flooding in seven cities and nine towns in Negros Occidental as of 9 a.m. Saturday, Provincial Social Welfare Officer Merle Garcia said.

She said 2,435 families with 9,607 individuals were in evacuation centers.

Persons affected by the floods in Escalante were – 7, Sagay – 4, San Carlos – 3,287 , Bago – 22, Kabankalan – 96, Silay – 238, Sipalay – 1,403, Hinoba-an – 2,692, Candoni – 130, Ilog – 30, Cauayan – 2,119, Calatrava – 5,205, EB Magalona – 295, Valladolid – 11,651, Moises Padilla – 4 and Isabela – 23.

In Bacolod City 438 families with 1,566 individuals also evacuated in 14 barangays.

Fisherman Peter Ferrer Peraren, 32, of Cauayan town is missing, town social welfare officer Eugenia Caña said.

She said Peraren went fishing on Friday and his boat capsized.

Three houses were destroyed and five were damaged by the floods in Cauayan, she said.

The waters in Barangay Caliling, Cauayan, that rose almost to the top of a church roof were subsiding on Saturday, she said.

Marvin Malacon said 10 houses in coastal barangays of EB Magalona were destroyed.

Mayor Joeditrh Gallego said about 35 houses were destroyed in Silay City.

He also said 30 pumpboats were destroyed and and 100 were damaged in Silay.*
