Flooding hits Bacolod, northern Negros, thousands evacuate, infra damaged

Heavy rains triggered flooding that forced more than 5,000 residents in Bacolod City and northern Negros Occidental to evacuate on Saturday, Jan. 31.

An 87-year-old woman also drowned in Purok Hillside, Barangay Fabrica, Sagay City, on Sunday, Irene Bel Ploteña, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) head, said.

The heavy rains, triggered by a shear line weather system, damaged roads and bridges in northern Negros Occidental and caused landslides in Toboso, she said.

Continuous heavy rain in Bacolod caused rivers to overflow, flooding numerous roads and forcing the evacuation of 320 families (1,038 persons) across 14 barangays, the Bacolod City Communications Office reported.

The evacuees were from Barangays 2, 3, 18, 20, 35, 36, 39, 40, Alijis, Bata, Mansilingan, Montevista, Singcang-Airport, and Taculing.

In Negros Occidental, 1,091 families with 4,034 individuals evacuated, Ploteña reported.

In Sagay City there were 3,144 evacuees, Calatrava – 166, Toboso – 552, E.B. Magalona – 30 and Cadiz – 142.

In Talisay City, 32 families with 107 members also evacuated from Brgy. Zone 13, Dionela Madrona, City Social Welfare and Development Officer, said.

Toboso reported landslides and damage to a road.

The PDRRMO also reported road and bridge damage in Sagay City, Escalante City, and E.B. Magalona.*
